Books & Collected Essays

We have included a number of books, collected essays and monographs in this section. They reflect our research interests rather than the concern we have had throughout our careers with the best ways of introducing Sociology to new students, how to teach the foundations of Ethnomethodology, and how best to position the relationship between Sociology and Philosophy. None of our publications on these topics are included here.

Originally published by Avebury in 1989, this study of entrepreneurial decision making was the product of 12 months field work in medium-sized company in the catering industry.  Second hand copies are available on Amazon and elsewhere.

This study of executive management was published by Routlege in 2019 and examines the routine practices of senior managers as they undertook the establishment of a new university.

This is a collection of hitherto unpublished essays, book reviews and commentaries on a range of topics gathered under three headings: Sociological and Social Worlds; Sociology and Epistemology; Ethnomethodology and Sociology.

We have provided both a complete version of all the essays in this collection (“Swanson Full” as well as links to individual essays.

This Monograph dates from 2013 and was unpublished. It examines Analytical Sociology, an initiative designed to provide a firm empirical grounding for Sociology by means of theories of the middle range and agent-based models.

Written in 2012 just after our collaboration re-started, this collection of essays considers various aspects of the impact of postmodernist thinking in Sociology and in applications of Sociology to the design of digital artefacts.
